AFC Wimbledon saw the Woodpecker Wombles take on the Dolphin Dons, to raise awareness of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s incredible work. The fixture filled with famous stars and ex-professional footballers, promised an action packed 90 minutes in London.

The Woodpecker Wombles commenced the game confidently, with early chances on goal, and a showcase of Eden Hazard’s breathtaking skills and technique.

Following great build up play from the Wombles, the ball fell to A Star Barber in a favourable area. Despite A Star’s good positioning and fake shot, he was unable to place his strike on target.

Swarmz responded for the Dolphin Dons with a lengthy, yet rapid run down the wing, which resulted in a forceful shot which narrowly missed the goal.

In the 26th minute, Chet Sket opened the scoring at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The ball was teed up perfectly on the edge of the box, before Chet neatly slotted the ball underneath Big G, to put the Dolphin Dons ahead.

Throughout the first half, the play was very open and end-to-end, with both sides pushing for goals, with plenty of opportunities being fired in from both teams.

The scoreline remained the same at half time, despite chances coming from Gemma Davidson and Junior Andre for the Wombles.

At the start of the second half, Coach Cain displayed some amazing skill with an admirable rainbow flick over the head of Danny Aarons, before lobbing the ball into the box.

Chet Sket scored his second goal of the game after some clever footwork with ball inside of the box, before beating the keeper at the near post to extend the Don’s lead.

Just two minutes later, Eden Hazard pulled a goal back for the Woodpecker Wombles with a great finish, sparking momentum in the side with just over 20 minutes left.

In the 73rd minute, a toe-poked finish found its way into the roof of the net from Wayne Routledge, to equalise for the Wombles.

Despite numerous, late missed chances from A Star Barber, neither side managed to get a winning goal, before the full time whistle, sending the match to penalties.

After some great penalty saves from both goalkeepers, Matthew Briggs scored the winning penalty, creating moments of celebration on the pitch for the Dolphin Dons, wrapping up a phenomenal day for charity.
