The last quarter final left to play in the EFL Cup saw Manchester United travel to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur.
Following Spurs’ 5-0 victory against Southampton at the weekend, they were looking confident going into this cup fixture. Similarly, United’s astonishing 2-1 win against Manchester City gave hope to the squad, who are struggling with results in the Premier League.
Spurs almost took the lead within the opening two minutes, after some quick passing play. A chance evolved from Kulusevski who narrowly mis-timed his pass into Heung-Min Son waiting in the box.
Bruno Fernandes played an excellent ball through to Hojlund, who was not able to release a shot on goal, due to being swarmed by white shirts.
In the 15th minute, Tottenham went ahead, courtesy of Dominic Solanke. A Pedro Porro long distance strike was parried back into the danger by Bayindir, as Solanke hit it home for Spurs to take the lead. Solanke has now scored in his last four appearances versus United.
Former Spurs man, Christian Eriksen was looking like United’s best player throughout the first half, with several chances in front of goal, including a promising shot on target which was blocked by Bissouma.
Ugarte’s interception from Kulusevski’s cross brushed past the woodwork to go for a corner, an extremely close call for the Red Devils.
The first half ended as Ruben Amorim’s men struggled to convert any of their chances, whilst the hosts remained 1-0 up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs started the second half just as Ange Postecoglou would’ve wanted as Kulusevski fired it into the back of the net. This goal came after a Lisandro Martinez block due to James Maddison’s cross, which fell to the Swedish international.
In the 54th minute, Solanke displayed an excellent solo goal as he made it 3-0 to the hosts. He cut inside with ease before gliding his shot between Evans’ legs, which found the bottom left corner, to extend Spurs’ lead.
Eight minutes later, Joshua Zirkzee managed to pull a goal back for the visitors. Zirkzee was gifted a simple finish after a poor defensive mistake from Fraser Forster.
After United’s goal, Spurs looked like a different team, as they were clearly unsettled after Zirkzee’s finish.
In the 70th minute, substitute Amad Diallo scored. In a night to forget for Forster, he was caught on the ball by Amad, who closed down the goalkeeper at unbelievable speed, to pull another goal back for United.
With just minutes left to play, Heung-Min Sons’ curled corner travelled all the way through and dipped into the far post side-netting, beating Bayindir to make the scoreline 4-2.
Jonny Evans’ glancing header found its way into the net in the dying moments of the game, adding another goal to the entertaining fixture.
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in the final four of the cup after the action-packed 4-3 win against Manchester, as they held onto their lead until the final whistle.
